Jeff Van Gundy Is Having A Heat Stroke
Monday, August 9, 2010
That's the only way to explain the comments that came flying out of his mouth over the weekend:
"They will break the single-season win record [of 72]," Jeff Van Gundy said. "And I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers' 33-game [winning] streak [in 1971-72], as well. And only the Lakers have even a remote shot at beating them in a playoff series. They will never lose two games in a row this year. They have put together a much better roster than anybody could ever have expected," Van Gundy added. "There is now no good way to defend them. They are unguardable. They are indefensible. They are just too good and have added so much shooting and are so versatile that they will score at will. And with Erik Spoelstra coaching, they will be in the top three defensive teams in the league, as well. The other 29 teams better hope the lockout gets moved up a year."Just so we're clear, here are some of the numbers that Miami will have to improve upon in order to top the '95-'96 Bulls:
Regular Season record: 72-10 (#1 in NBA History)
Home Record: 39-2 (#2 in NBA History)
Away Record: 33-8
Longest Win Streak: 18 (tied for 7th in NBA History)
Points Per Game: 105.2 (Ranked #1 in the NBA)
Points Allowed: 92.9 (Ranked #3 in the NBA)
They started the season 41-3, at one point they won 37 straight home games, and are the only team in NBA history to lose consecutive games only one time during the regular season.
And then let's take a look at those '71-'72 Lakers that had the 33 game win streak:
Regular Season record: 69-13 (#2 in NBA History)
Home Record: 36-5
Away Record: 31-7 (2-1 on neutral sites)
Longest Win Streak: 33 (#1 in NBA History)
Points Per Game: 121.0 (Ranked #1 in the NBA)
Points Allowed: 108.7 (Ranked #6 in the NBA)
They only started the season 39-3, and went from November 5, 1971 until January 7, 1972 without losing a game. Thirty-three wins. In a row.
So there you go Miami Heat. A few numbers to shoot for.
And in case you're wondering, the most wins for a team that didn't win the NBA Championship in a season was 68 by the 1972-1973 Boston Celtics (68-14). Some other teams that won a ton of games and didn't win the whole pie include the 2006-2007 Dallas Mavericks (67-15) and the 2008-2009 Cleveland Cavaliers (66-16) led by none other than LeBron James.

So, the word is that Miami is all set to send Shaq to Phoenix for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks?!? This is obviously pending on medical examinations which could disrupt this whole trade, due to Shaq's broken body (do these exams test broken heart disease? how about broken ego syndrome), but wow. Why Shaq? Marion is set to be out, which I can understand, and I guess that, what, with Pau Gasol in L.A. (and lighting up my Nets with EASE), no one else was available? Shaq hasn't been SHAQ in a while. What's the draw?
I guess divorce will make an otherwise reasonable baller do some strange things.

Late Bloomin'
Friday, December 21, 2007
I didn't think we could do it. With less than a minute left, I told wifey "we'll screw it up" (well, I dropped the F-bomb, but I digress...); even when Vince Carter hit that long bomb to give us the 94-92 lead, I was jut waiting for the Heat to crush our dreams.
Then my Nets pulled it out. We stuck it out in overtime, and pulled out the 107-103 win in Miami. And it was all guts. We were down 7 to be almost winning, and if it wasn't for the lax defense as regulation ran down (we could've kept that shot from going off), we would have had a really beautiful story.
Oh, did I mention that Dwayne Wade dropped 41 on us? Yeah, we overcame that adversity.
I laughed at Shaq fouling out (this is a recent trend of his, no?), but did not like Sean Williams' 5 fouls in 15 minutes last night. And forget that the Heat went into last night with a record of 6-19 or some nonsense. It's the moral victory.
Big up to Malik Allen for his solid performance last night. Those young guys can pull it out when they want to!
In another angle to this Heat vs. Nets game, Alonzo Mourning (remember he stiffed us after Jason Kidd begged for him to come to NJ?) will be out for the season - and possibly the rest of his career - due to his knee injury. At age 37, and with his on-again/off-again problems with his kidney, this is expected. Just sad to see him go - although anything I say his name, a bit of bile hits the back of my mouth.
Sorry.
This Saturday we have Baron Davis and the Warriors to deal with. Oh joy.

"Shaq, get your mind right"
Friday, November 16, 2007
I was watching ESPN a week or so ago, and the commentators (which included ya boy Stephen A. Smith) were discussing the obvious downward spiral the Heat are on right now (currently 1-7 - and soon to be 1-8 tonight when they play the Celtics - in the Southeast Division). The onus, with Dwayne Wade just getting back from an injury, has been on Shaq trying to get his head in the game. Smith even made comments about not being surprised if Shaq hangs it up or his game continues to deteroirate due his off-court situation. While I get that Shaq needs his time to deal with his wife seemingly hiding funds behind his back, and get that dealt with, why bring the team down with you?
D-Wade is talking about trying to "get Shaq motivated", as if he just shot a movie and was living the high life. With Shaq averaging something like 15 points and 6 or so rebounds a game, I could be out there in his uniform and playing his minutes for him. I think Shaq either needs to take some serious time off or stop the shullbit and get his mind right. The strain of a divorce has to be wild - from the dividing of assets to the kids, everything has to be finalized to a T. And that costs mad loot in and of itself - I don't think Shaq wants Shaunie to get broke off like Juanita did! But on the same token, the Heat don't have to suffer more than they already would without him there. His under performance is insulting, and could be avoided if he just did what he knows he needs to do: ish or get off the pot.
All in all, though, I am glad the Heat are out of the Nets way. So, good luck to Shaq, I hope you got the ill Cochran lawyers - you gonna need 'em!
